Hi all, apologize if this is in the wrong section.

I'm not married yet but my fiancee and I plan to marry in January in Canada. He is looking to immigrate to the U.S. A few simple questions:

1.) Is getting married in Canada OK if the end goal is for him to live and work in the US?

2.) Where would I/we begin to file this proesss, at the US consulate in Canada or in the US once I return home? (I'll be there for a month)

3.) Anything else I should be aware of? We are getting married in Canada because he really can't afford to come here on the K-1 Visa and not work while the paperwork clears. Our current plan is to get marriedd, file, and then have him move here when he is legal to work.

Thank you!

(where can i do some more reading on this?)

1) Absolutely.

2) Actually you will file the paperwork with the correct lockbox or po box associated with your state of residence. You can mail the packet from Canada or America. It won't make a difference. http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-130instr.pdf

3) Make sure you are prepared and really study the guides. Have all your ducks in a row and it will go smoothly.

1. Yes that's fine. It doesn't matter where you get married.

2. You would file based on where you are living. It is covered in the I-130 instructions: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=c67c7f9ded54d010VgnVCM10000048f3d6a1RCRD&vgnextchannel=db029c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD

3. To me the way you are doing it is the best way. It is what we've gone with for a few reasons, except that I got married in the US and then came home. There are a few more links that I think will be useful for you:

VJ Guides: http://www.visajourney.com/content/guides

Canada forum: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/93-canada/

If you look at the top of the Canada forum you will see the Canuck EI Thread. In all likelihood your husband will be able to collect Employment Insurance from Canada when he first moves down because he is authorized to work right away. This will hopefully give you both a little more peace of mind as this is a stressful process. Best of luck!
