Hi,

A close friend asked me for help and I need your input. He is also a US citizen, sponsored his wife a Philippino woman, and she came here just a week ago with a IR-Visa. She was told she would receive her SSN in a week and Green Card within 2-3 weeks.

Her mother's sickness turned very bad and she wants to go back to Philippine to see her. What happens to her status if she leaves US for Philippine while not having SSN or Green Card in her hand yet? What if things turn bad and she has to stay in Philippine for a few months? How could she come back to the USA after that?

Please help. They need to know it ASAP to know what to do! Thanks.

*** Moving from Bietnam to Travelling During Immigration forum ***

She will be fine. She does not need the SSN to travel, and the stamp she got on the visa page of her passport when immigrating will serve as a temporary greencard for 1 year. As long as she doesn't remain outside for more than 6 months, there is no problem at all; if she stays between 6 months and as year, she may have some difficulty re-entering and should have proof ready that she didn't abandon her greencard, such as being on the lease/ deeds for their US home, having bills etc.
