Gary, if they are joining for the education benefits, it suggests that they probably had no other way to pay on their own, right? So we're still talking about the disadvantaged, right?

I didn't feel "disadvantaged" and neither did my brothers. We did it for love of country and a sense of duty.

Gary, why do you feel that what was true for you and your three brothers is what is true for the whole military? Your logic just doesn't make any sense.

Well you know we did talk to others while we were there. Most people that I came in contact did it for the same reasons. Very few did it for a "job". There are a lot easier ways to earn a living you know.

Any other vets out there? Why did you join?

These stats seem credible, although I'm not familiar with the differences between these various categories:

I think those guys are the biggest category, not sure.

There aren't a lot of easier ways to get college paid for, though.

You might think that's logical, but I have known several people from middle class backgrounds who joined for the benefits. A lot of people think it's a good idea.

You can think what you want. Unless you have been there and done that there is no way you could possably know.

But I didn't. I never said anything about Gary and his family.

My simple point is that you can't deny that people who want education can afford it better through the military, and that those people who need to join the military to do so are still disadvantaged because they can't afford it themselves. That duty to country is not the only reason people join up.

The military life isn't an "easy" way to get a college education. You think putting your a$$ on the line getting shot at is easy? You think spending months away from your loved ones is easy? Clearly you have no idea what you are saying.

there are many reasons, alex. you're attempting to highlight just the educational level as the reason why people join. when i did, it certainly was not for the educational benefits.

who gives a rat's-@ss what John Kerry said... it's not 2004, it's 2006!!!

All this blathering about Kerry said this, Kerry said that, is just Rovian-styled GOP-spinnage designed to distract us from the truth that the Bush policies are DISMAL failures.

John Kerry isn't running for SH*T, so why the hell are GeeDubya and his henchmen spending all their time blathering about Kerry. WAKE up, GOP and anyone upset about his remarks, it's 2006.

This is just pure and simple more Republican spinnage designed to distract voters from the real issues:

SIX years of FAILURE by the current administration!

No I'm not! Remember the original discussion? The discussion about how the military recruits at poor high schools? I'm saying the educational benefits are one reason people join. And the statistics Jenn posted show that the non-officer military is not as educated as the general population, to get back to the ORIGINAL original discussion.

Education is one benefit of the military that attracts those people.

Gary, stop being dramatic and acting like I'm saying the military is easy. I'm not.

who cares what John Kerry said any more? He's not up for re-election and nothing he did or didn't say will change the fact that more than 100 US troops died this month in Iraq and we need to find a solution so that more men and women don't come home in bodybags.

Repubs are desperate because they know their approval is so far in the dumps. Trying to make Kerry synonymous with Dems to energize their base, and people like the OP and other bushbots fall for it every time. Luckily we don't all.

Actually some of us love people like John Kerry and his comrades because their antics will cost the Democrats a lot of votes.
