We are waiting on an interview date and this process has moved much more quickly so far than we had anticipated.

We live in a border town and have the luxury of seeing each other regularly. We hadn't planned on my husband giving up his job/moving over until May--and now we're looking at everything being complete by potentially January/February. So we have a couple of questions.

We regularly cross back and forth across the border to see each other. After he goes for his interview and is approved, the next time he crosses does that HAVE to be his POE/Landed Immigrant moment? Or can he cross back and forth and not become an immigrant until he chooses (of course within 6 months of the visa being issued).

Also, can he just keep working in Canada if he does immigrate here (it is within driving distance) or is there something else he must do? Does anyone know and can anyone help us?

We have very comparable situations. Border town as well as waiting for our interview date.

I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong but if I'm not mistaken the next time he goes down he will have to immigrate as his passport I believe will have the visa attached. Not a big deal however as he can freely travel back and forth after that. It is also my understanding that with exception of vehicles, you have up to 10 years to move personal belongings. So the only real issue with date of immigration from my viewpoint is taxation and vehicles.

Regarding work I'm also quite certain he can continue working here. I'm just not clear on the downside to that other than earned currency. I believe also his medical will cease to be in effect in Canada upon immigration.

I am interested in what else others can contribute . . . or correct :blush:

They very occasionally let a Canadian not use their visa, but usually they make you activate/ use it first time you enter with it in your passport. However, as yours is a CR-1, that should be no problem, it allowed travel immediately and he can continue his job in Canada.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

I'm guessing he will have to bring his car across? He has the intention of selling the car in Canada and thought he could perhaps not import it but still drive it back and forth for awhile. Doesn't sound like that's realistic?

My "guess" is he can still take his car across but would not be able to insure it in the U.S. once Canadian insurance expired.

thanks. I just have no idea who to ask these questions to. We will still have his house in Canada, until the sale goes through. I can't see how it would be impossible to keep the vehicle if you technically still have a house in the country.

I would call a local POE and check with them. They can surely answer the question. http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/ports/

You should also check the DMV site of the state you intend to live in as to their requirements. I just checked Washington and new residents have 30 days to title and register your vehicle. So technically, after that you would be driving illegal.
