Are Food Stamps a No-Go?

To make a long story short, my husband moved here to Georgia on a fiance visa. We got married in July and filed the necessary paperwork for AOS and work. In August, I lost my main job that was supporting us. Since then, I've only been working a PT pizza delivery job. My husband just got his visa and I'm still looking but we're coming up short on jobs! We're living on credit and out of options at this point. I remember something in my paperwork that promised I'd support my husband w/o gov't help and if I did, there could be consequences.

Is there any way I can apply for food stamps w/o worrying if they'll send my husband back? (Basically, is it even legal considering our paperwork)

From what I understand, the USC is free to do whatever it is that is available to USC, the only person that cannot apply for mean tested benefit is the non USC. Not even sure if food stamp is means tested.

PS: Worst case scenario, they are not sending your husband back, I think even i fhe gets it then you woudl be asked to pay it back. Now, seeing that you haven't even completed AOS yet I would thread carefully.

You as the US citizen can apply without issue. Try checking out your local food banks, since most are non-profit charitable organizations.

You can apply. They will get your husband's info and if he is working prorate his income. They'll count part of his income, all of yours, and count you as a household of 1. If you fall below the gross income limits you'll get benefits. No danger to him.
