Hello,

First of all, this is a great a forum and the guide section is really helpful.

I have been learning a lot about N-400 and I-130+NVC process in the past several days.

As you may see from my signature, I plan to apply for US naturalization in July 2013.

Currently, I have been doing a lot of reading to get both my wife and I ready as early as possible.

One thing that is not clear to me is if we should just apply for her I-130 with me as LPR now.

Especially, I still have 10 months to go before I am eligible to apply for naturalization.

Then, upgrade our application when I become USC. What are the pros and cons for doing so?

If we do the above, how much time will we save vs. applying I-130 after I take my oath as USC?

If we look at the processing time here, it says the I-130 processing time is 5 months, even for LPR.

https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/processingTimesDisplay.do

However, I read that as LPR, it could take years to sponsor a spouse. So, I am missing something here.

At what stage that I-130 process will get stuck for LPR vs. USC.

Is it at NVC stage? If this is true, it means I will safe a lot of time if I apply I-130 before hand, correct?

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it if knowledgeable forum members here can help answer my above inquiries or share their experiences.

If your I-130 and accompanying documentation is ready to go now, file it. After you complete the naturalization process, you can upgrade your petition from spouse of LPR to spouse of US Ciitzen.

A petition filed by an LPR on behalf of a spouse would sit at the NVC until the priority date on the visa bulletin is current.

Thank you, now I have better understanding.

Per this thread, the forum member reported that when they upgraded their I-130, the priority date got restarted instead.

Is this a recent development?
