I-485 Interview in Oct. Can I be my wife's translator?

So my wife and I have our interview in October. It says on the interview notice "If you do not speak English fluently, you should bring an interpreter." My wife is currently taking English lessons, and was recently evaluated at her school as speaking at 4 on a scale of 10, as she's only been in the country since February. She speaks English well enough to answer questions like 'What is your husband's birthday, how did you meet, what are the names of his family,' etc.

Do we need to have an interpreter? I speak fluent Spanish. If an interpreter is needed, can I serve as her interpreter despite being her husband, or do we need to take someone with us?

Well, after doing some initial poking around, it appears that me being her interpreter is frowned upon. I'll be interested to hear from other members, though, on what their experiences were.

My wife spoke limited English as well. When the questions became more difficult, he got on the phone, requested a Russian translator, and whole thing was done via speaker phone. Spanish is a very common language here so I doubt if there will be issues getting a Spanish translator on the phone, or even in the office for that matter. You cannot be the translator.

Hmm. I was wondering what would happen if I showed up without one and the need arose.

I would take one if I where you... Better than having to reschedule interview... Always be prepared. I know you can't be the interpreter... Good luck
