Good morning

So I only came across this form for applying for a Social Security Number this morning, I guess I had thought (wrongly) that I didn't get a SSN until after the approval for AOS, but now that i'm filling it in I have a few quick questions:

Firstly... I have to select whether I'm a Legal Alien allowed to work or NOT allowed to work. I've read the instruction sheet with all the classifications on which states that if i'm K1 fiance then i'm allowed to work but if i'm K3 spouse then i'm NOT allowed to work.

I entered the US on a K1 but now I am married, so which do i tick?

The question is complicated because if you are a Legal Alien NOT allowed to work then the form announces you need to provide a document from a governemnt agency that explains why i need a SSN and that i meet all the requirements, when actually i don't have such a document!!

What to do what to do...

If anyone can explain and straighten this out for me, much appreciated

Thanks

Jon

So for that form, you are a legal alien allowed to work. You are still a K-1: do not let anyone tell you that you are a K-3 now (that is a different visa, not a fact determined by your marital status alone). There is a time limit to when you can get a SSN on a K-1 though. how much time do you have left on your I-94?

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

Great! One last thing. Don't bring your marriage cert of any other extraneous docs that might confuse the SSA workers. Just bring your I-94, K-1 visa, passport.

Social Security workers are pretty uninformed and people get many weird responses. You are allowed a card until 14 days before your I94 expires. After that you have to wait. Give your name exactly as written on the I94. Ask for a supervisor if they say you aren't eligible.
