My husband and I (petitioner) are filling out the I-864 Affidavit of Support and got really confused. I am a student in graduate school and he is too but currently took the semester off. We both do not have jobs and are trying to figure out what to do for the I-864 form. Do we need to fill anything out or just get sponsors (joint sponsor) to fill out the documents? So far I am thinking I need to fill one out and a joint sponsor. But what is the I-864A form for?

you are the petitioner and sponsor so you file an i864 as sponsor. the joint sponsor will fill one as joint sponsor.

the i864A is the co-sponsor household member, for example a USC spouse, parent, sibling who lives in the same house you do.
