I used the search button but i did not find anything specific on it, perhaps someone out there knows this. My EAD has been approved and mailed to me, according to my calculations it should arrive today. Thinking ahead, I was planning on making an appointment at my local Social Security office for next Tuesday(8/21/12), My question is, do i have to wait for my SS card to get in the mail before i can go to the DMV and renew my expired license(3yrs) or can i request what some of you guys called, a statement and take it to the DMV. By the way i live in California and my current status is AOS pending, i already received a date for my interview. I'm new here but i will work on update the time frame of the whole process. All i can say right now is that it has been fairly quick. About 3 months. Thank you

I'm almost in the same case, dealing with the DMV in CA, got my EAD approved recently (and GC). I went to the SSA a week after receiving my EAD to change my name on my SS card. Problem is, my EAD info was still not in the system so the employee at the SSA couldn't verify the legality of my EAD. Same story as when I applied for a SSN after my arrival in the US, it will take a few weeks before the info is updated in their system (I should receive a letter from the SSA saying my status was verified).

If you read the CA driver's handbook, it's written that for a name change, you need to first have your name updated with the SSA, because the DMV will check with the SSA if your name matches with your SSN.

My personal plan is so to wait for my new SS card with my married name, and then go apply for a driver's license at a DMV office.

As i suspected, i received the card today and boy am i excited. I will probably go to the SSO first thing monday and ask them myself. Now i have the interview to look forward to, excited and perhaps a little nervous but I'm sure everything will go well. Will update and probably come up with questions before then.
