speech at oath ceremony?

After my wife passed her test/interview, as they were scheduling her for the oath ceremony, they told her they'd like her to give some sort of speech at it.

Is this something everyone does...i.e. everyone just gets up there as they are taking the oath and says a couple of things about being happy, etc., or is it something else? What are they wanting her to do?

Whew--at least this whole process is almost over!

At some of the ceremonies people are asked to share their thoughts on what it means to them to become a US citizen. It's just a voluntary thing to make the ceremony a little bit more special. It is not required.

I've never heard of this. They never asked me, nor any member of my family, in fact, the only person who gave a speech during my husband's ceremony had to ask to see if they would allow her to give a speech. In some cases there are so many people who need to take their oath that by the time they're done watching the videos from the president as well as others, there's no time to let everyone else give a speech.
