We have a little different situation than most. My husband was a green card holding permanent resident for 37 years. We met, married, and lived in the US for over 5 years before we moved to Norway to be near his family, and father in poor health.

Living in Norway was an abandonment of his permanent resident status, so we have to start all over. We just sent in the I-130 and I am trying to anticipate what needs to be done next. I was reading up on the I-864, and saw in the instructions the section about "Are there Exceptions to who needs this form?" My husband worked about 20 years in the US before we moved to Norway, does that count toward this exception? I have SSA paperwork backing up the years of work in the US.

My husband also served 8 years in the US Marines, but it is my understanding that this will not become a part of our case toward regaining his permanent resident status until the interview process. We did state it on the cover letter we sent with the I-130, just in case.

We may have problems finding a co-sponsor, so I am hoping that this helps our case. Anyone know?

Thanks in advance for those who can offer any advice!

Karla

Thanks! I think I will have a co-sponsor and a back-up I-864 filled out just in case. It seems that others have had problems getting the I-864W accepted. Just want to be prepared! :D
