And my great uncle was a Marine, Combat Engineer, helped put the airstrip back in on Corregidor when we took back the island from the Japanese in WW2, out there in Manila Bay.

I was all over that island when we took the tour. I don't remember seeing an airstrip. Time for Google Earth...Ah, there it is! Out on the east finger!

Well, we found out today my wife scored very high on the ASVAB and her health is great; however, since she is not a Citizen yet and therefore can't get a Secret clearance she is limited to the Air Force "Services" career field at this time, which includes billeting, health and physical fitness...gym management, and food services... all lumped in together. I was surprised she is very happy and excited about pursuing that since her civilian job experience and free time activities are also along those lines. I mean, she is just glad she can serve, and looking forward to it all. I am proud of her.

They said she will leave for Basic Training in about 4 months at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas for 8.5 weeks, then immediately on to Ft. Lee, Virginia for her school for 31 days. All in all she will be gone a total of about 3.5 months.

I will take care of our 2 year old son on my own that entire time. I probably will spend some time at my parents. My brother and his wife are moving here to Tennessee from Florida in September, living just across the street from me, which will be nice with her gone too.

Of course I will be there when she graduates from Basic Training. My mom and dad already said we will ALL be there when she graduates, including them. Me and our son will drive to Ft Lee, 8 hours one way, when and if it is possible to see her there if she gets any time off on the weekends. I remember when I first went in the Army at my school we were off every weekend, if I remember right.

I worry it will be hard for our son. I guess he will get used to it quickly at his age, until he sees her again. But when we have to part again I am sure it will be very hard for him, and so I feel some sadness about that. I just pray everything goes well, all the way around...

My wife is excited about it...but she is also scared. I know she will be shocked when she actually gets there and starts going through Basic Training. She knows from me some of what to expect, but you can hear about it over and over again, but the clarity of the reality of it doesnt sink in until you are in the midst of it. But she is determined.

She takes her oath one week from today, Wednesday, July 25 at 3:30PM.

OP: This is an incredible journey for her! Kudos to you for supporting her on this :)

My husband's an Airman and he wanted me to consider getting into his branch. Had to say no... I'm just not the plane-flying kind

of those differences between us, for it is not difference which immobilizes us, but silence.
And there are so many silences to be broken.”
