Aight guys i have a question for you guys.

Its time for me to file my N400 and i have some issues with that. So ive been living in detroit for the past 5 years as a student. I have had 3 different addresses. During this time my parents lived in lansing and i was using that address on my driver lisence AND that was lansing address was used for our tax returns as well. NOW my parents moved to ohio a year back and they are using the ohio address for thier tax returns. I'm still under my parents for the tax returns HOWEVER i changed my driver lisence to DETROIT. so now ... when i have to put my current address, do i put the ohio address or the detroit address?

You are a student living temporarily in Detroit and hence, it looks like you need to put down the Ohio address, i.e., your parents' address.

I read also from a different thread that the federal tax return address is considered as the primary address if you live in two states which is your case (I assume you go to your parents' house when there is no school and you also receive 'some' mail there).

Just my personal opinion on this.

One more note: Did you update your address with USCIS to the Ohio address? All permanent residents need to update their address via form AR-11 with USCIS. This is pretty straightforward and can be done online.

well i havent applied yet. so im still figuring out which address to use. If the PERMANENT address is based upon the tax returns, then it is the Ohio address. If it is based upon where majority of my mail comes and my driver lisences then it would be detroit beceause that is where im currently living. so that is what im confused on. also, on previous addresses, ive switched addresses 4 times due to being a student. do those have to go on the list as well?

I had written a post saying that you should put down your parents' address as your address if you were still a student, but with a Michigan driver's license I think you're now technically a resident of Michigan. And remember you need to have been a current resident of the state you're applying in for 3 months to be eligible to file N400 (doesn't have to be same address, just same state).

I don't think it matters anymore that your parents claim you on your taxes; if you're a dependent of theirs and they live in a different state it doesn't stop you from being a resident of another state. As a student you would've still put your parents' address down but since you got a Michigan license you're now your own resident.

As for the addresses, I think you can put down either all the addresses you've lived in for which you had signed paperwork, or you can just put down your parents' address and your current one that's on your license now.

I'm not exactly sure you might be able to explain how that works in a separate typed document, but I think in general this won't be an issue for them other than if it creates a conflict with the 3-month rule.

Otherwise, remember to file your AR-11 now with the address on your AR-11

Well, this might be little bit confusing.

but here is the catch, you will be interviewed/fingerprinted when its determined you were at the jurisdictionof the office you live near by, and usually you have to live at least 3 month (in most states) for the office to take over your case, ok, what does this mean?. that mean you will need to find out where exactely you are going to be when you file, Ohio or Detriot!!!! and for how long before you file you lived there!!!

in the N-400 , there are almost two places you will need to put your address..

Current address is the one you live at by the time you file, and is the address you should receive anything related to your case. so if in Detroit, then its.

IRS address where you filed the taxes should not be the one used as current if its NOT since you will be asked at the interview (what is your current address!!!), you can not simply say your parenta address while your current is in Detriot (specially if more than 3-6 month)

anyway, you will have the opportunity to type all other addresses your lived at within the last 5 years with dates as well.

What concerns me is this...did you file AR-11 for everytime you moved to a new address? this is what you should be worried about because I heard it might represent a big issue if you did not, I even saw a thread of someone denied for not reporting change of address with USCIS . I can not locate the thread though :), so hopefully you are good with that one

i think it makes sense to put my detroit address then since that is where i have been living for the past 2 years. its only my taxes which im dependnt upon my parents that are in ohio. as for the ar-11 form, i havent even filed my application yet .. you only have to worry about that if u change ur address after filing correct?

Any non-us citizen is required by law to report their new address within 10 days of moving to the new address. so you should definitly go a head and change it now using AR-11 (which can be done online)

Should you worry about it? it depends on the officer who will interview you, he/she can see you have different addresses which is ok , but might ask for every AR-11(you can save and print it after doing it online) for every move you made, and you might be questioned why you dont have any in case you did not,

so here is the thing, dont lie at your N-400 , do the AR-11 since you should be done with after you moved two years ago. and IF only IF you are asked at the interview you can explain why you didnt do it on time as required. I would not feel surpries, many dont even know they shoud change address with USCIS or simply dont pay attention

ok so here is the deal. even when my parents were living in michigan they were at a different address than me since i changed addresses 3 times in 4 years. however my parents address always remained the permanent address. Now do i have fill the Ar-11 form for all the temporary addresses i changed or just use the permanent addresses to fill in my N400 and AR11 form

I know you are confused, but the instructions are pretty clear about this matter

Part 6 A and B

A: where have you lived the last 5 years, and here they do not care about if that was with your parents or that is different from IRS.

you live with your parents lets say a year, then to Detriot a year, back to your parent a year, then last two years in Detriot.

then you start with the most recent (two years in Detriot), then a year with parents, then Detriot etc till you fulfill the requirement for the last 5 years...

you will find that question B ask where you have worked/ studeid in the last 5 years, so you have to make sure your answers add up, how come you say you lived with your parents in Ohio while you were studying in Detriot!!! you know what I am saying..

Also, you have to include every official move you made (where you changed your name in DL, or put your name on a lease ...etc )

AR-11 is required whenever an alien move from an address to another, and should be filled within 10 days of moving. since you did not know or forgot, easily just fill the last one, and as I said if asked, tell the truth that you did not know you should, and its up to the officer what can be done about that.

keep asking questions till you are fully satisfied.
