Sonoma County, California Begins Smoke-Free Outdoor Dining on June 1st

Sonoma County Smoking and Secondhand Smoke Ordinance

Only affecting areas under County jurisdiction—

does NOT APPLY to areas within city limits

What areas are covered by the Smoking and Secondhand Smoke ordinance?

 All County-owned property, including parks and recreational areas.

 Unincorporated areas of the County:

 Enclosed places of employment, as well as units and common areas of multi-unit housing.

 Unenclosed areas used for recreation, dining or drinking, and public events, as well as

entryways and service areas (such as ATM lines, ticket lines, and bus stops.)

 There are provisions for the establishment of designated smoking areas in certain

circumstances.

When does this ordinance take effect? The ordinances take effect 60 days following

Board approval for most provisions e.g., November 12, 2011 for common areas of multi-unit

residences and December 3, 2011 for all entryways, service lines and county-owned property;

other effective dates include June 1, 2012 for outdoor dining, January 12, 2013 for existing

units in multi-unit housing, and February 3, 2013 for County Regional Parks’ campgrounds.
