Emigration, the Reverse of Immigration

Emigration in US

While immigration to the United States is well documented, so is emigration from the United States. And while people coming to the United States still exceeds those leaving, most who do leave, do so not as permanent emigrants but as expatriates for a limited amount of time. Early in its history, the United States had a high level of immigration because of its low population density. But in the past century, emigration from the United States has increased. Former military personnel contribute to the number of emigrants from the United States. When they retire, they return to the countries where they were previously based.

What are some other reasons for emigration from the United States?

Marriage to a foreign national with a job in that foreign country

Economic reasons, where it may be more inexpensive to live in another country

Family reason

Religious reasons

Health reasons

Business opportunities, especially during these economic times when unemployment is greater than 8%

Political disenchantment

Evasion of legal liabilities, such as tax evasion

What countries do most U.S. citizens emigrate to?

The list below contains the top countries where most Americans go to hang their hat:

Canada is missing from your list. In 2010, 9243 Americans became permanent residents of Canada, according to Wickipedia. I will see if I can find the total number of US emigrants currently living in Canada.

Would you mind posting a source link to your above information? Thanks.

Ok - found it. Canada actually heads the list which is what I suspected with 250,535 ex-patriate Americans now living in Canada,

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
