Hi all, I'm in CA and just got an SSN with my EAD (so that I can get a driver's license). My social security card says "Valid for work only with DHS authorization"... are there conditions on it that I have to remove once I get my green card? I'm just curious as to why it says that.

The conditions are that you have a valid work permit(EAD) when showing it to an employer. When you receive your greencard, that'll work as your EAD too and your EAD/AP combo card isn't valid anymore. Worst case scenario is losing greencard and still having the old restricted SSN is asked to show it to an employer. I admit most placed only ask for your number and hardly ever your physical card. You can go and update it at the SSA. DHS are the guys determining whether or not your allowed to work. Your authorization is the EAD or greencard.

Edit: .. and congrats on getting EAD. Getting driver's license is great!

FYI, You do not need a SSN number to obtain a California drivers license. The DMV will simply go off your visa validity and you are eligible for a valid license until the expiration date of your visa.

Though I am not in CA, they have asked my SSN to get DL. cool.gif

That is the only restriction, that you need employment authorization(your EAD) to go along with the SSN in order to work. When you get your green card, you can go back to the SSA to have it updated in their system that you are a legal permanent resident, and you will then be mailed a new card without that stipulation on it.

Unfortunately I was on an overstayed visa (thanks, Mom and Dad) so I had to wait til I got my EAD to get a license. Thrilled that things are finally moving along, though. Thanks, everyone!
