Hello, I had my K1 interview January 24, 2012 and I arrived in the US last Tuesday (03-27-2012). While having my interview in Rio de Janeiro for my K1 visa, the first consul made me sign up a document saying that I will have to sign up for the military within 30 days of entry in the US, or I'll have to pay a huge fine or get jailed if I don't. Does anyone here had to sign up for the military as well? I'm going to send an email to the consulate in Rio, asking how to procced.

Back when I turned 18 (1980!), you could register for the draft at any US Post Office.

I just did a quick search to confirm that this is still the case -- and it is -- but it turns out that you can now register online:

http://usgovinfo.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=usgovinfo&cdn=newsissues&tm=45&gps=570_188_1148_675&f=00&su=p284.13.342.ip_&tt=2&bt=0&bts=0&zu=https%3A//www.sss.gov/RegVer/wfRegistration.aspx

And as a clarification: you are merely required to register for the draft, you do not have to actually enlist in the Military.

And once you are on the list, please know that the draft has not been in effect since the Vietnam War in the 1970s.

If you are a male between the ages of 18 & 25 then you need to sign up for "Selective Service" which is how they would draft people for military duty if needed.

More Info.
