A lot of us from the pakistan embassy are dealing with exceptionally long AP's and receiving them about 9 months to a year after interview... Unfortunately I have no clear answers but at this time and it is best to keep in contact with the embassy and DOS..and I would suggest that even tho a congressman can't really speed it up I would contact them to see if they will begin making formal inquiries to your case.

Since your from a MENA country they usually do in depth security checking

here is our tracker for Islamabad and you can see the visas issued and those pending (I know this isn't from your country but it may give you an idea minus a few months)

We did a Cr-1 and he had AP for about a week? Week and a half? It was pretty quick. That was a while back though. Things change depending on who you are (for example how common your name is that they have to sort through a few thousand people to figure out you are you and then check you out), what the people are checking out, how many people are in line, etc.

Well, at the time we went through Amman was also processing Syria and Iraq... and so we applied in Feb of 2006, and our stuff was at the embassy by Aug of 2006, but then his interview was scheduled for June of 2007... which was eventually pushed back until April, but we still had a wait! It was just at a different time than yours :) Good luck!
