Immigrant Visas & The Chennai Consulate

I just came to know a couple of weeks ago that the U.S. consulate in Chennai will not be processing immigrant visas.

This change is as of Jan. 2012, according to this (http://chennai.usconsulate.gov/immigrantstous.html)

Three questions:

1. Why did they decide to no longer process immigrant visas in Chennai, given the convenience for those in South India?

2. Has anyone else filing for an IR-1/CR-1 been affected by this change?

3. Will there be some sort of choice or just random assignment as to whether someone living in Tamil Nadu, for example, has to go for their interview at the Mumbai consulate or embassy in New Delhi?

1. Why did they decide to no longer process immigrant visas in Chennai, given the convenience for those in South India?

They didn't tell the specific reason. Why! All we know, they got a new office in Mumbai and has 40 counters. And they wanted their Mumbai office to be a head office. So that could be possible reason.

2. Has anyone else filing for an IR-1/CR-1 been affected by this change?

People were effected when this change was annouced, but now everything is normal.

3. Will there be some sort of choice or just random assignment as to whether someone living in Tamil Nadu, for example, has to go for their interview at the Mumbai consulate or embassy in New Delhi?

No choice given! NVC will decide the location ( nearest Embassy/Consulate ) for you. If you are from TN, then you will have your interview in Mumbai.

All those originally assigned to the Chennai consulate, i.e., the states of Kerala, Tamilnadu, and Karnataka, will now be moved to the Mumbai consulate, not the Delhi consulate.

Why is your consulate showing Armenia instead of Mumbai?

what about the filers from Andhra Pradesh??

I'm really sorry, but I'm not sure if it's Mumbai or Delhi for you

I have no idea...I thought I set it to none because I was unsure. It keeps defaulting to the first one listed which is 'Armenia.'

You can change it to Mumbai now

what about the filers from Andhra Pradesh??

Where were you originally supposed to go?
