I am trying to help my friend obtain a B2 tourist visa.

Since I will probably be in her country at the time of her interview with the embassy officials, I wonder if it would be helpful or hurtful if I attend the interview with her.

If it matters, she has very little to document ties to her home country.

We therefore both know that getting a visa will be a bit of a long shot.

Still, we also that she will never get a visa if she does not apply for one.

What could I possible do at the interview?

My thought is that I might be able to impress the official with the fact that I am a real person, that I am willing and capable to assuming financial responsibility for visit and that I understand the law and will insure that she returns to her home before the visa expires.

So, will this be:

Helpful?

Hurtful?

Irrelevant, and therefore a complete waste of time?

Thanks for your help.

You cant go to the interview. Only she can. Complete waste of your time. Your friend has to proof on their own that they will return to their country. If they cant prove that to the IO then no visa.

Is your friend working? Can she get a letter from her employer stating that she's going on a short leave and will be getting back to work on a particular date? That could help some.

you won't be allowed at the interview, and any promises you make, whether orally or in writing are completely useless because you have zero authority over her once she reaches the US...you cannot force her to do anything, whether crossing the street or getting on an airplane. You cannot be legally compelled to pay any of her expenses in any form and you cannot 'guarantee' her return because of all of the above. she has to convince a VO that she will abide by the terms of a tourist visa; you play no positive role in the visa process.

In answer to your question, you can't possibly do anything at the interview and it would therefore be a complete waste of your time.

As stated above, she will need to show sufficiently strong ties to her home country in order to overcome the presumption of immigration intent.
