How to Become a Teacher in New York

By W D Adkins, eHow Contributor

Teaching is a challenging career, but a rewarding one for those who enjoy helping young people learn. New York is among the states with the best opportunities and benefits, including one of the highest average salaries in the nation (over $55,000 annually in 2008). If you want to become a teacher in New York, you will need to have at least a bachelor’s degree and pass the appropriate certification tests. However, the New York State Department of Education offers several pathways to become a teacher in New York. Steps 1 and 2 below describe the basic requirements and steps 3 to 5 outline the alternative pathways to earning a New York teaching certificate.

Difficulty:

Moderately Challenging

Instructions

Things You'll Need

Bachelor’s degree

Teaching certificate

1

Attend an accredited Teacher Preparation Program in New York at one of over 100 colleges and universities in the state. This is the primary path to become a teacher in New York. The programs lead to a bachelor’s degree in education and cover all the course requirements for teaching in New York including student teaching.

2

Apply for certification as a teacher in New York once you have completed the Teacher Preparation Program. In order to be certified you will need to pass the appropriate tests. These vary according to the grade levels and subjects you will be teaching. At the end of this article is a link in Resources to the New York Board of Education website where you can determine which tests you need and apply to take them online.

3

Choose the “’Transitional” alternative pathway if you have a bachelor’s degree in a field other than education but want to make a career change and become a teacher in New York. The state Department of Education has several initiatives to recruit professionals interested in teaching, including their “Troops to Teachers” program for veterans. To qualify you must have a bachelor’s degree. In the Transitional pathway, you will complete an accelerated 200 clock hour training course. Afterward, you will be able to teach with mentoring while you complete the college coursework required for full certification.

4

Apply directly for a teaching certificate if you hold a National Teaching Certificate from the National Board of Teaching Standards. A National Teaching Certificate satisfies all New York requirements to teach in the state of New York.

5

Make application for reciprocity if you hold a teaching certificate from another state. Assuming the requirements are comparable you will be given a provisional certificate. You still need to pass the applicable New York certification tests but can begin teaching in the meantime. For new graduates with bachelor’s degrees in education from accredited colleges and universities in other states the application and testing requirements are essentially the same as for those completing a Teacher Preparation Program (see Steps 1 and 2).

My fiance is also a teacher. He's looking to teach in MA. I read a ton of websites with info on teaching and reciprocity and felt all kinds of confused. What I did was call the dept of education. I don't know how they are in NY, but the guy I spoke to in Boston was just awesome! He told me every step we needed to go through, how to apply and have the license held here until he's eligible to work, his recommendations for advanced degrees to get a higher salary, etc. You might want to take 30 min and give them a call to get all the specifics for international applicants cause they're a little different than state to state. Best of luck to you both!

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.
