I couldn't believe that they didn't have poppies here either - nor do they observe a 2 minute silence. In fact, this morning we were at the local army base commisary at 11 am and it passed by totally unobserved by everyone there. Last year I asked a friend in Canada to send us two poppies so we would be able to wear them for Veterans Day - and I have just asked for 2 more - one of ours got caught in a zipper and a corner of it tore out. We are wearing ours right now - and will wear them to the symphony tonight as well. My husband is a 25 year veteran of the US army. There are local Veteran's Day parades, though, which is good.

Oh, my first Veteran's Day here I also made two poppies out of felt and used a marker pen to make the centre.

oh my god why did I not discover this part of the forum sooner!??!?!!

I miss calling my hooded sweaters "bunnyhugs" and not having people look at me like I'm totally nuts!

(I think bunnyhugs are primarily a saskatchewan/alberta thing...I could be mistaken!)

I still take off my shoes when I go to someones house and people think I'm totally nuts.

I'm sick of people thinking I'm totally nuts!

My best friend came to visit me and brought me Saskatoon Berry Jam, A box of Fudgeo cookies, and a million boxes of smarties and a ton of coffee crisp chocolate bars.

I'm finally getting a chance to visit next month and the first thing I'll do is go to Tim Hortons!

I'm going home for a visit next month, and I've asked my Mum to get me a bunch of poppies so I'll have them for next year. I did have one the first year I came down here, but like others, I've put it "somewhere safe" and I can't find it! My paper one worked quite well tho for the day.

I'm also going to get a bunch of Smarties I think...which reminds me, I should email Mum and ask her to get any left over Halloween size packages for me...! and bring those back with me. And whatever else I think of while I'm there. Usually off the shelf muscle relaxants, and Gravol.

OH OH OH! Christmas crackers. Must have Christmas crackers. There's none here. I saw them once about 3 years ago, and haven't seen them since. Probably because nobody knew what the heck to do with them!

Must remember to buy collapsable suitcase to take with me to bring everything back!

and yeah...bunnyhugs is primarily a Saskatchewan thing. ;)

oh, I must mention...did anyone notice at Halloween that the "Smarties" here in the US are made in Canada? :o:lol:

Ummm perhaps I will fit in better than I think south of the border. I dunno what you mean by "Christmas crackers." I myself have put out crackers....at Christmas. But never knew there was something specifically called "Christmas crackers."

Maybe I have spent many years using them inappropriately? Enlighten me?

They're a cardboard tube about as long as my forearm filled with candies and sometimes little toys. You and a friend each pull on an end, like a wishbone, and it makes a 'bang' sound (like a quiet capgun).

I think of them as a British thing rather than a Canadian thing.

Oh do I feel like a putz!! I understood the cracker to be a food item. I buy those "Christmas crackers" for my girls every year. We would generally pull them after dinner at Christmas. Maybe I need to buy some this year for next??

I miss Gravol. Thanks, I'll be adding that to my list. :)

I've found Christmas crackers at Costco and Fred Meyer. Not sure if you can find them back east where you are, but they're there. :)

We don't have Costco near here really, and I've never heard of Fred Myer.

It'll be easy enough to get some in Toronto when I'm home next month. Hopefully they won't be confiscated because of the cap powder on them tho :P I've brought them before, so hopefully it'll be ok.

Yeah, Karen, you might want to bring a stock of them with you. They're hard to find in most cities I think.

I was shopping on line last night and emailed Canadian Favourites to ask them if they could stock Campbell's Tomato soup cuz I was tired of the high fructose corn syrup in it here in the US. She emailed me back in less than half and hour and said "done"

Seriously, why does soup need to have high fructose corn syrup in it? sheesh!

Ah, sorry, outside of the Pacific Northwest, Fred Meyer is named Kroegers. :)

(I don't know why all these stores have to be differently named when they're the same company!)

But I'm glad you're covered with the trip to TO. :)

Oh yeah another rare thing I remembered that I miss. Harveys restraunt. Hated it as a kid and even in college, then before moving I actually liked it. Now anytime I go to Canada to visit, I have to eat there at least once or twice. Mandatory eating...

The vets at intersections and outside of stores..............

those are a different quality poppy....small............with a twistie wire. I haven't seen the vets out peddling them for a couple years.........at least in my community. The poppies in Canada are much more substantial in both size and quality......I prefer them.

A&W for me! Yeah, its a US company, but its only in a few states, and of course, not the one I live in :P Plus, they don't have the Family burgers down here for some reason. There used to be an A&W close to where I used to work in North York (in Fairview Mall) and I got addicted to the Teen Burgers. I think they put crack in them or sumthin.

Only 2 weeks and I'm goin home!
