Hi everyone, I am from california, los angeles. I have applied N-400 on 12/02/2011 and now scheduled for interview on 03/06/2012. But I have to travel out of country in April 2012. How long it takes to get oath ceremony letter in los angeles after interview? I am worried if I would be able to attend my family function in april in India. Thanks.

I have no clue what date you might be given. But a thought did occur to me that once the interview was concluded and you were told if you were approved or not, that you might want to mention your trip to the interviewer and ask if there is a way they can request a date for you that would not clash with your travel date?

Would you also need a US Passport to travel if you take your oath before your trip? If so and you get a March date, you still might be cutting things close. Just some of the things I would consider.

It is possible to get expedited passport or 24 hour passport. It probably costs extra money and you need to have a confirmed travel ticket to be eligible to get the expedited passport. You can do google search and you'll find the information.

If luck is your way, you may even have the oath ceremony on the same day as your interview. You can put in a word across the Immigration officer about your intended trip to India during your interview.

Expedited Service takes about 2-3 weeks, door-to-door. You can request for overnight delivery by paying for both to and from the passport agency. you need to make an appointment at a Passport Agency in order to avail the expedited service. you need to pay an additional $60 for this expedited service along with the $110 for passport application.

Sonia, if it gets too close to your travel date and you don't have time to send off for your passport I think you can go in person and get a passport in a few days (for real emergencies they will do same day). Here's the information:

http://travel.state.gov/passport/npic/agencies/agencies_909.html

We needed to get a passport for our son when he was 6 weeks old as we needed to travel because of my grandmothers ailing health. We took a risk and went ahead and booked the tickets. Thankfully we made an appointment, submitted the paperwork and were told to return a few days later to pick up the passport.

Hope it all falls into place like you want it to!

If you have your interview on March 6, you may or may not be a U.S. citizen by the time you travel in April. Bad timing on your part. It takes about 4 weeks from the interview to the Oath appointment. Here are the scheduled ceremonies for SoCal:

You can get a passport from the Los Angeles Passport Agency in 180 minutes. You'll need to make an appointment upfront. Make it for the day after your Oath Ceremony:

You may have to reschedule your Oath appointment if it conflicts with your travel plans, which is not a big deal.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

No idea. But I think that most of the Southern California offices send you to the Naturalization ceremonies that happen at the LA Convention Center (so not same day). Brother Hesekiel kindly provided you with a link above.

I think your timeframe might be a bit tight. But like Brother Hesekiel said, you can always re-schedule your oath ceremony and go once you get back from your vacation.
