When my wife filled out the DS-230, there was a section on there that asked if she wanted INS to assign her a Social Security number. Do they really assign her on or do I have to submit the application once we pcs to the US?

In Section 43a of DS-230 you check "yes" that you want Social Security Admin to issue a SS number and card and 43b you check "yes" to give your permission to share info and SS will send a SS card about 3 weeks after you arrive in the US. However, in our case we did what I just said and no SS card was sent, so we need to go to our local SS office and apply in person.

The INS closed down back in 2003, close to 8 years ago.
