I wonder if they started sending a new passport since they began charging in 2004? I had mine changed right before that and all they did was send me old one back to me, with an amendment noting my name change. It did only take a few weeks, but I was scared mailing that off, too!

Glad you got it already and don't have to worry any longer. :D

It's a fairly recent procedure...like within the last year. Has something ELSE to do with national security and the prevention of passport fraud...

I believe if the passport is less than one year old, they waive the fee. Think it's 65 bucks if over a year old.

We were married July 2 and my amended passport says the amendment is effective September 20. I think I waited a few weeks before I sent it off, too.

ETA: I did it back when they just amended the passport for free, the amendment is just a few lines in the back typed that says "THIS PASSPORT WAS AMENDED ON SEPTEMBER 20 2004 TO REFLECT THE NEW NAME: BETHANY XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX"

wow.. my wife's passport didnt took so long.. they didn't modify anything on the front page, they just added a commentary and in th back of the passport says 'ths person changed her last name to blablabla' thats it
