Hi VJ's:

Got another question about State ID. We're planning to apply for a State ID in California. Any K1's who can enlighten me for some advice or tips? Can we k1 get a state id? Well, I am still a K1 since I have to adjust my status soon. my I-94 still have until Feb 3 till it expires, and I am already married and do have my SSN ( SSN still not in my married name ) .. do you think I will be good getting a state ID?

You will not be able to get a California ID card before you either have your EAD or your Green Card at hand, as the I-94 needs to be valid for more than 180 days, which it is not.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

I was able to get a State ID with an expired I-94 as long as I proved my AOS is processing. All I needed were these:

To prove:

*Name - Passport, K1 visa (I brought my Marriage Cert to prove name change)

*Age - Passport (I brought my Birth Cert but they don't need it)

*Residence (I needed two for this to prove my address.) - Official mail from the gov't which are NOAs from AOS & Letter with my Health Insurance Policy that shows my name and address

*SSN Card

I like having my State ID so I don't need to carry my bulky passport all the time especially when we go out for a drink.

***oh I'm sorry. I just saw the California DMV website. I mentioned the Illinois requirements which are pretty much the same.

I heard about the I-94 tho that k1's expiration date will not meet the DMV req't that's why I wanna verify it from here before I waste time going to DMV and being turned around..Thanks for the info everyone!!!!

No. Wait until you have your EAD in hand. It takes California about 2 months to verify legal presence and issue an ID card.
