California? If it is below 50, dress like you are going freeze to death. Otherwise, dress like you love the sun. California is casual. Wear something comfortable. Slacks and a sweater are just fine.

Thank you sir! That was a big help. Just tense meeting them. First impression last :)

I especially second the slacks (pants). If there are any creepy people or crowds that result in your need to sit on the floor at any time or in kid-sized chairs, you'll be glad not to be in a dress/skirt. Dressing like you were going to church on a Wednesday night is good. People will probably be taking pictures so make sure you are wearing something that you don't mind having plastered all over FaceBook or shown to the officemates of your in-laws. Good jeans are almost always a sure-shot for the typical family.

If you have space in your bag to pack some cute socks, that is a handy thing to have sometimes. In my family, the shoes come off just about everybody and lots of people wear novelty houseshoes or funky socks. It is a conversation starter and certainly helps keep the toes warm.

If you can look at some old family pix taken at other Christmas celebrations, this will probably give you the exact answer you are looking for. (Facebook is place to look most of the time.)
