My wife, who is applying for naturalization as spouse of a US Citizen is being requested to bring "proof of marital union" I'm a bit confused by this since a couple of lines above she's asked to bring our marriage certificate....shouldn't this be proof...obviously it isn't so what is the evidence of "marital union"?

Likewise what constitutes "proof of residence"?

thanks

excellence question. by the way, I am looking for the same evidences as you for my wife.

I put together evidences such as tax transcripts for the last three yearrs, apartment leases(both), rent paid receipts, home closing papers, cars insurance card showing both our names. We had no joint bank statements.

Being in love is not, "not having to say you are sorry? with the USCIS. Its showing legal documents that you jointly share your assets and pay your bills and taxes together.

Its not easy to show legal joint ownership of such items as the remote control for your TV or a toaster, even though in a divorce each of you will be paying your attorneys 350 bucks an hour to fight over who gets to keep these small items. So you leave it to the big stuff like homes, vehicles, joint bank accounts, (money), health and auto insurance, etc.

Being in love is having a joint utility bill, according to the USCIS.

So I handed my electric bill to my wife with her name added to it, she said, what did you do that for, I don't want my name on that bill.

Just replied, it doesn't make any difference anyway, since you are my wife, if I don't pay it, they will go after you, but the USCIS doesn't know that!

I did it for your interview, don't you remember when I was talking to your friend, Mary that had to make a special train trip from near St. Louis to Chicago and pay a huge hotel bill, just to bring in a joint utility bill? They sent her an RFE and never said why, just come in, then she had to make a second trip to bring one in. She was nine months ahead of us, so I got this bill just for you. And even with our joint home deed, personal property and joint tax returns, joint vehicle ownership, bank accounts, wills, etc. her IO still wanted to see a joint utility bill. She had that bill in her brief case. Surprise? She was approved.

After she received her certificate I noticed they dropped her name off my bill, called them to find out why. Said they switched to a new billing system and didn't have the space for both our names. Reason I called the electric company, the only utility with a local office in town. Our natural gas, cable, phone, and cellular offices were all taken over by major corporations and closed down the local offices, had to call 800 numbers, and after waiting for hours, said it wasn't necessary, and wouldn't do it.

This was a bug the USCIS had 2-3 years ago, think they are off that bug now, but if they get it back, showing good reasons why you can't present a joint utility bill. Spouse is liable for it irregardless. Current bug is not that you received a parking ticket 50 years ago, bug is, do you have proof that you paid it.
