A few weeks, and no you can't track it. In the meantime, the I-551 stamp in your passport is a temporary green card so you have all the rights and responsibilities of the actual GC. There are a large number of people who never get the SS card in the mail so after 2 - 3 weeks, just go to the local SS office and apply in person if yours doesn't show up.

You have to go apply for SS card right ?? They don't ever just send you one in the mail ?? Planing to get off work early and take the better half for hers. Don't wish to miss any work if possible

If you checked the right box, they are supposed to send it in the mail, but so many times it seems to slip between the cracks so many people here wait a few weeks and then go get it in person.

Sure I checked the box. But only 2 weeks since she arrived. So we may get one in the mail??

Any way to check on line if they issued one ???

Sorry about the hijack, but was planing to go today. Now I may wait another week

you can go any time, but the local person may say just wait, so you have to smile a lot and nicely insist they take your information. Take birth certficate and marriage certificate along with passport. Usually don't need them, but sometimes we have seen people sent home to get them.

In my spouse passport at POE the only stamp is with the date stamp , nothing else.

We checked the box to get the SS, but I was planning to go to the office. Thanks for the info that the passport stamp serves as the temp GC. Now we are most interested in getting a drivers license and they require certain proof of ID and the bank won't let me add her to my account without 2 pieces of ID.

Thanks for all the help I could not have completed this process so quickly without this web site.

That is all there should be in the passport--take it plus the other two documents just in case.

What other 2 documents are you referring to?

Sometimes SS office wants to see birth certificate and marriage certificate.

You will need SS# for drives license, to get a job, to open a bank account, etc, so if it were me, I'd go today--even if they might be grouchy !!

Yes--they accept any birth certificate--mostly won't ask, but some do. Polish isn't all that easy to read, so if asked, be patient with them, pointing out whatever information they may want
