Hello VJ Community!

I'm a little confused on wether my fiancée whom came via k-1 (wife now) can get a SSN and ID in California.

I read the SSN web site it it states that unless my wife has a work permit, she can't get a social security number.

I read the DMV web site and it states that I need a SSN number for an ID card but if I eligible for SSN, the SSN requirement for ID.

I need the SSN to open bank account and for insurrance purposes. How have you handled this before? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

SSN is a national identifier.

As per SSA for K1, your wife, who was once your Fiancee at the point the K1 was granted, can most certainly get an SSN. She needs her passport, which indicates that she arrived on a K1. If she's had a name change as per the wedding, she will need the Marriage certificate to grant her a SSN in her married name, else it will have to be in her Maiden name.

I'm surprised you hadn't requested her to get an SSN soon after her arrival in the States.

Thats as much as i know, if I'm wrong, someone else will most likely correct me.

My now wife just did this a little over a month ago before we were married. She received her SSN card with maiden name a week later. After

we were married, we went back and applied for a name change and she recevied her SSN card with married name. It does help that the clerk

knew exactly what we were there for. We're in Northern California. We did not get a DMV ID because I am a retired USAF and got her a military

dependent ID.

Here is the link on how to obtain an SSN for your wife: http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

We just followed the instructions. Good luck!

Yes, she can get a SSN without her work permit because she came on a K-1 visa. The people at the Social Security office should know that, but sometimes they don't. Bring all documentation with you when you go to the Social Security Office...passport, birth certificate, everything. It's better to have it all then have to go back again. The bank should open up an account with a K-1 visa as well, as long as you bring your wife's passport, and something that shows proof of address. When we applied for Ben's SSN, they printed out a receipt that had our address on it, and we used that at the bank and they had no issues with that and opened up the account with no problem. I hope this helps you, good luck with everything.

Thanks much for your responses!

Did you check legal alien allowed to work or not allowed?

I didn't file for authorization to work since it would expire per I-94.

Chigs - I didn't file for her SSN because I wanted to get married first so we only have to file for SSN one time.

Want the card under her new married name. she's been here less than 2 months!

Thanks again!

You should check "legal alien 'allowed' to work". :)
