Last week I posted a topic about possibly needing a co-sponsor. Well after getting many responses, I am concluding that I would like to follow through and have my mom be our co-sponsor just to be on the safe side.

However she was asking me what she needed to show. Besides the affidavit of support form, her W-2s and maybe a letter of offer for employment what else would she need to show as proof of meeting the minimum requirement?

Also, she would have to show sufficient income for 3 household members, is that correct? Because my dad and my brother share the same household with her.

Also, about a letter from your employer, is this absolutely necessary for the co-sponsor to provide? My mom was asking because she feels strange asking her employer about such an unusual request. The thing is she does not have a normal job in which she would have regular interactions with her employer as most people would (she's a flight attendant), In fact she only sees her employer on average about once a month so she doesn't know her employer well. She was wondering if she could provide a screenshot of her work portal as proof in place of the employer letter.

Thank you!

I am the petitioner.

W2's aren't much use without the complete tax return that goes along with them. She needs to include a copy of her entire tax return, including all forms and supporting documents (W2's, etc.), just as it was sent to the IRS. If she filed electronically then she needs to create a tax return identical to the one she submitted electronically, including the supporting forms. A better option is to get tax return transcripts from the IRS. They're free, take about two weeks, and no other supporting documents would be required.

Her household size would include her, your dad, your brother, AND the intending immigrant - 4 people. If she claims any dependents on her tax return that don't live with her then they ALSO count in her household size.

The letter of employment should state when she started working there and her annual salary or hourly wage. It should be printed on the company's letterhead stationary. It's common for an employer to be asked to provide this, and most will have a standard format letter they can provide. She shouldn't feel odd about asking for this.

Thanks for clarifying that! Very helpful good.gif
