"Of the 14 million Americans currently unemployed, 6 million have been jobless for more than 6 months."

(CBS News) Of the 14 million Americans currently unemployed, 6 million have been jobless for more than 6 months.

CBS News correspondent Elaine Quijano reports that many job seekers say being unemployed is being held against them.

Delores Barnes always goes job hunting armed with her dossier of documents, including her birth certificate.

Two years ago, she was laid off from her supervisor job with New York's Children's Services. Ever since, Barnes has been looking for work to support her and her nine-year-old daughter, Savianna

"I can't give up. I'm on a mission. I have a daughter, and she's like, I have to be strong for her. I have to show her that you just don't give up," Barnes says.

Yet no amount of persistence can overcome the simple fact that some employers don't want to hire the unemployed. In job posting after job posting, companies require that applicants "must be currently employed."

"They have that perception that they are the dead weight, therefore they want the strong people who are currently employed," says Robert Krzak, president of Gecko Hospitality.

Krzak says some companies won't even consider unemployed job candidates.

"If there is a candidate out there who has been out there in the job market for six months or even a year or more than a year, a lot of companies are very suspect of that, because why aren't they working?" Krzak says.

"It's discriminatory and the fact that just because you don't have a job you can't compete for a job," says Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn.

DeLauro is sponsering a bill aimed at stopping the practice.

"These are competent people. They have lost their job through no fault of their own, Why shouldn't they have an opportunity?" DeLauro says.

Barnes says the practice doesn't make sense, hiring people who have jobs when so many don't.

Barnes is now training to be a computer technician, and says she'll keep pounding the pavement, even though with some companies she can't even get her foot in the door.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I am one of them really.

I do not think we need yet ANOTHER "protected class" and this one being people that choose not to work, which IS what they do. Not to say it may not be a bad choice for them at the moment, but actions have consequences, some unintended.

Seriously I would sooner hire a supervisor, carpenter, engineer, etc. that got laid off and WORKED at any sort of job while collecting supplemental unemployment than one who did not work at all. So far, that is my choice. If they attempt to make it NOT my choice, that will be dealt with accordingly. I recently hired a guy that was laid off and worked as a cab driver.

The fact is that these rules to "protect us" have resulted in the situation today of very heavy job screening via the internet. There is hardly a place left where you can simply walk in and fill out an application, talk to a manager and get hired. Even bagging groceries requires going through a multiple week online screening process which can result in a dead end for any number of reasons...none of which you will ever know or be able to prove. You get your updates of your progress through an online system similar to what USCIS uses to "track" a petition. At any point the process just ceases and no explanation. Do you think furhter classes of protected workers will reduce this process?

As one recently put it, "We do not have a system of discrimination...we have email"

I expect the same people that support long term unemployment, unless it is YOU that collects it, Kip, to dispute what I say. I expect the same people that support unions, except when their rules make it more profitable to refuse to work, to dispute what I say.

Agree with you 100% about not needing another protected class of people in this country. It's a nanny state already and it's bringing this country down even further.

For myself it benefits me not to work atm. If I take a call out from the hall that only nets me a few months of work it messes up my unemployment and drops me to the bottom of the out of work list. When I get within a few weeks of using up all my unemployment I'l call one of my buddy's and tell them I'm ready to go to work. No job apps or any of that bs. You just make the call, they call the dispatch at the hall and he fills out the paper work and you fly up to work. I haven't filled out a job app in over two decades although I do keep a resume on hand....not sure why though but it's there if I ever need it.

Best way to do it is take the lay off during winter so you can kick back and stay warm. You have football and basketball, and when baseball season starts it's time to go back to work. This summer I took the time off though to rest up and catch up on some fishing, drinking, and plain screwing off.

In a few months, I'll legally be able to practice on my own, so if I am ever laid off, I'd head that route. In fact I'd probably tie my services into my wife's firm. Worst case scenario there would be no resume gap.

Self employment is a good option also for a lot of trades/professions.

Especially when it's under the table. :)

Another good reason for the FAIR TAX. Nothing is under the table and everything is under the table.
