I think I am going to go to an immigration lawyer, at least for a consultation on the visa process. My fiance is from Cameroon but living in Korea and I am expecting our baby in February. I need to know if having a child in the US makes a difference for him as far as the process goes. I know a lawyer probably can't speed up the process, but at least I would know that everything was being handled correctly. Just wondering if anyone out there has used a lawyer and if you felt it was worth it. I know it will just add to the expense, which I really can't afford, but if it makes the process smoother and ensures that everything is done correctly, it might be worth it.

Having a baby makes no difference.

There have been some people on VJ with horrific storys of how lawyers destroyed the process. There have been some with storys that were OK when they used lawyers but VJ is a self help website where most people do the process themselves with help from others on the website.

The guides are very good and step by step.

This forum is probably going to do you more good than a lawyer. My fiance and I did everything ourselves by lurking on the VJ boards. Just make sure you do your research, triple check documents, and read over instructions very carefully. The lawyer basically holds your hand the entire process, and that's fine for some people... but this forum is filled with thousands of couples who actually went through this process themselves, something most lawyers can't say. They have first hand experience.

Are you trying to get to Korea, or Cameroon?

I can remember reading several posts from VJ members which would prove your point of view wrong. Many members' petitions have been denied and/or delayed due to mistakes done by the a contracted lawyer. For these people, they did not only waste time -which is precious to people in distance relationshiops- but also money. Lots of it.

VJ is full of do-it-yourselvers who have been successful in this process by themselves. We have saved money in an already very expensive process. If you commit to reading lots and asking questions when unclear, you can certainly do this yourself.

Best wishes! (F)

my american fiancee spoke to a lawyer before we found VJ and he actually told her she should go on birth control because having a baby during the visa process would look bad for us and that she also needed to prove that her two children from her first marriage where not actually mine... both things that are quite simply wrong and not needed at all. im not saying that they are all like that but i have found that there are a lot of people on here that are far more knowledgeable and if you can understand how to fill in forms and read the guides then i think with the help of VJ you can do it by yourself and save a lot of money :)
