Nexus should I get one while in K1 visa process?

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a Nexus card while in the middle of a K-1 Visa petition.

According to VJ timeline my I129f may be adjudicated near the end of November.

How valuable will a Nexus card be AT and AFTER POE?

It doesn't speed you through POE when you activate your K1 - if that's what you're asking. Everyone has to go in and have the Border Patrol guys do the same paperwork.

I don't think it's good or bad - the Nexus will help make future crossings faster because you're in a different line but it does not affect anything to do with your VISA.

I was thinking of getting a NEXUS card for prior to and after POE.

Having experienced some LONG lineups for US Customs both in Calgary and Toronto, I'd like to bypass the lineups and just get through as quick as possible.

I understand that on POE day I will still have to go to the NEXUS line and then secondary I believe it's called, but I won't have to wait in the long lineup for the first person.

I worry my whole way standing in the lineups and for me getting through quicker would be a peace-of-mind thing.

Just remember once you get ur K1 visa and enter the USA, you can't leave the USA until u get Advane Parole (AP) (if u apply for it) or the greencard!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I was thinking that too - if the Nexus interview is after you've entered on the K1 and you don't have AP yet- you'll have to reschedule the Nexus interview because you won;t be able to leave the US yet .

It doesn't work that way. If you use NEXUS, your entry is based on the program. You have to go through a regular line and get entered into their system on the visa. Sorry, but you're going to have to wait in line. Just show up to the airport earlier.

I used my Nexus on POE perfectly fine. Just told them I was activating a K1 and importing my vehicle and they brought me inside. Inside, there was a Nexus lineup as well...which included just me!

Hey,

So I applied early August for a Nexus pass and it took FOREVER for them to process my request. As it turns out, my Nexus interview is scheduled after my K1 visa interview, but before my POE. This means that the first time I will be using my Nexus pass is for my actual POE at Buffalo.

What I'm wondering is - is it worth it to go to the interview? Can I still use it after I'm living in the U.S. and have AP for traveling back to visit my friends/family? I feel like my question is similar to the OP - is it worth it for use after POE and living in the U.S.?

Thanks!

-Holly

Yes, its worth it.

Go to the interview. Just update your address after you move.

The card is good for 5 years.

**Just be aware that if you're travelling with other people/another person, everyone in the vehicle must have Nexus too(land border crossing).

Everyone in the car does NOT have to have a NEXUS card to be in the car, just to use the designated NEXUS lane. If someone doesn't have a NEXUS card, you just go through a regular lane. the NEXUS holder doesn't have a whole lot of questions asked of them, because they already have pre-clearance.

A NEXUS card will not get you through any faster to activate your K-1. Ya it's nifty to have, but they'll still need your passport and all your documents.

I love my NEXUS card and I'm glad I got it! No fuss going across in a car, and I get right through that horrible horrible line up for customs at the Calgary airport.
