How do I register my marriage?

My fiancee and I are planning on having a civil marriage in India. As I understand it, I have to get a No Objection Certificate. I don't know what this is or how to go about getting it. I've contacted government offices back home. I'm currently in Australia and have contacted the US Embassy here and they were cluless as well.

Also, I've heard that the registration process is a bit faster for some people (maybe only a 2 weeks waiting period for their paperwork to be procssed). Now, would it be advisable to wait the entire 30 days before getting married? Or does it not matter. I've heard that those who do this often have troubles with immigration paperwork later.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what a No Objection Certificate is, but my husband is from Lebanon and we had a civil marriage in Cyprus. We had to visit the American embassy, Lebanese embassy and the Ministry of Justice in Cyprus after our wedding to legalize and register our marriage. When I came back to the US, I had no problems regarding the validity of our marriage and changing my name using our marriage certificate. You may want to contact the American embassy abroad and not the American embassy here in the US. The requirements are different from one country to another. We also hired a wedding planner who took care of all of the paperwork that was needed prior to our marriage. She knew exactly what we needed and where we needed to go to legalize and register our marriage.

You and your finacee need to file a joint application with the Sub-registrar of marraiges (in their form) and wait for 30 days. The sub-registrar office will display it for 30 days and there are no valid objections, then they will undertake registered marraige. We went that route and there is no short cut I know of.

Do those marriage certificates come with an Apostile on the back? We had to pay extra for that in UK to ensure the certificate would be treated as a leagally binding document in the USA.

We just get a stamp from the sub-registrar with his/her signature.
