Hello VJ,

I notice that NVC requires original documents; or certified copies; but has anyone sent them the certified copies of those documents, instead of original ones?

How do you get 'certified' copies? What makes it 'certified'?

Will they accept copies that are public notarized? Are these considered 'certified' copies?

Thanks VJ members.

Certified copies are issued by the same authority/ office that issued the Original Certificate. We generally get certified copies of the original misplaced or lost.

Department of State lost my Naturalization certificate when I applied for my passport and I had obtained a certified copy of the Naturalization certficate - since it's original was not required to be sent, I sent USCIS a copy with my I-130 petition.

Certified means a document produced by the goivernmental agency that controls the document--it typically has a raised seal or a gold seal or an embossed seal from the government agency--a notary can not magically turn a copy into a certified document--no way, no how.

In addition, sometimes you will have to attach an apostille to make the document certified, but that's a whole other topic.

Thank you NavyK and magical. That answers my question.

Now on the second question. Will they take those certified copies? Has anyone sent their certified copies instead of originals?

Thanks VJ.

Yes, certified copies are accepted by NVC - absolutely certain. I hope someone who actually sent a certfied copy to NVC will respond.
