For the purposes of the I-134,how are dependents calculated? For example, a household of 6 where the mother is a dependent of the father but the remaining adults and children in the home are earning their own income. They live in the same house but are financially independent of the father who is the co-sponsor on the I-134. So would he list only his wife as a dependent which makes it a household of 2? What if he has one daughter who depends on him for additional financial support but is not considered a dependent per income tax rules? Does it still count as a household of 2 or 3? Thanks!

A spouse is not a dependent. The spouse is included in the household count. Minor children are included. If the parent claimed anyone as a dependent on their most recent tax return then they are included in the household count.

Thanks for your reply. So in this case, since no dependents are listed on the tax return, the I-134 would also have no dependents listed, right? I didn't see a place where it was necessary to list how many people are living in the household. Is that more applicable to the I-864?

Same for the I-134. If no other dependents then it's a household of 2 plus the intending immigrant. Total of 3.
