Do you still lose your birth countries citizenship?

This was great help for my husband and I , He is the NZ citizen, and I didnt want him to loose his citizenship if we ever decided to move their. i was really concerned and thinking maybe we shouldnt apply when the time comes. So my question is, when he get citizenship here what passport should he use when travelling back to NZ on vacation? Should he keep both his NZ and US one ( when he gets it)?

It's up to your husband to decide whether he wants to keep both passports or not. As has already been established in this thread, to relinquish the other citizenship requires a lot of paperwork - and it seems like your husband also wants to remain a NZ citizen as well.

If he comes a US citizen, in the eyes of good ol' US of A he is only an American citizen - US does not recognize him as a New Zealander anymore, though they won't force him to give up his other passport. This means than when leaving and re-entering the US, he MUST use his American passport. I believe there are pretty grave consequences if a US citizen uses another passport to enter or leave the US.. but someone might correct me here if I am wrong. You would have to check what the regulations are with NZ in regards to this. Basically, if he used his US passport to enter NZ, he won't be there as a citizen, he will be there as a visiting foreigner, and subject to the same rules as other American visitors.

If I were to get US citizenship, this is basically how traveling would go for me:

1. Leave US using US passport

2. Enter Finland using Finnish passport

3. Leave Finland using Finnish passport

4. Re-enter US using US passport

Yes I agree with Little_My's post above. You must first check with your birth country to make sure THEY will allow the dual citizenship.

As is stated above you enter and leave US on the US passport and enter and leave birth country on THAT passport.

If anyone has first hand experience contrary to this please chime in.

Interesting topic.

As many said, every country is different.

For me, If I took the oath and became a US citizen, my Egyptian nationality drops automatically after one year of the aoth as they assume I do not want it anymore, unless I fill a form with the embassy here during this year allowence to declear my intention to keep my Egyptian nationality and pay fees.(they make sure to take a photocopy of the citizenship certificate and the US passport as well).

Definitly, one need to check their own embassies for that important information.
