Hey guys,

I am having a real hard time with filling out I-765 form, particulary -question 11. "Have you ever before applied for employment auhorization from USCIS?" I came to the US as a J1 visitor and did get a social security card that says "valid for work only with DHS authorization" . A year later I changed to F1 status and still used that same snn number to get employed. I got married three month ago and ever since then have't done anything to keep up with my status. So, i am pretty sure I am out of status now eventhought my I-20 expires only in Augus and I still haven't received any letters from the school i used to attend. So, my question is : what do I mark - a "yes" or a "no" option? If i do have a snn number even if it is restricted it still means i have applied for employment authorization, right? Another thing is that it askes when i did received it. Does it have to be an exact date or just a month and a year will do?

I guess the main reason i am so confused is that i have a friend who was in the same situation and he marked it "no" , as in he has never applied for an authorization before and still got granted his change of status.I just dont want to make any mistakes in my paperwork.

Any help would be greatly appreciated . Thank you so much in advance and have a great day!

A SSN is not work authorization. The question is, have you ever applied for an EAD before? How did you work when you were on F-1? Did you get an EAD?

To the above poster - you don't have to put in no... you have to tell the truth. If s/he has applied before, s/he must put yes.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

Of course. But based on what s/he describe, s/he hasn't applied for work authorization before.
