Illegal immigrants aren't what has brought wages and salaries down. That's ludicrous. Job growth has exploded in the service oriented jobs which tend to be low paying jobs - in fact we have more low paying jobs then we have Americans to work them. We aren't producing and manufacturing in the U.S. like we were 40 years ago as most factory jobs have gone overseas and south of the border for cheaper labor. Without a comprehensive protection of American jobs, this trend will continue.

Let me ask this to all you free market capitalists...

What will keep U.S. companies here on American soil vs. relocating where ever cheaper labor can be found? And what is our only preventive strategy to keep U.S. companies here? If profit is the sole driving factor in the free market system, how do you balance the incessant pursuit of business to always be looking for cheaper labor?

First rule in economics is that tariffs and restrictions always reduce the standard of living in the country imposing them.

On another note, what if other countries enabled a 'comprehensive protection' of their jobs? The service and remaining high-tech industry in the US would collapse as exports would drop dramatically.

The fact is that your typical socialist is not going to pay x dollars more for a product just because it is made in the US. The US, much like Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Europe have already done so, needs to heavily push the knowledge / high tech economy. Yet, the country's education system has dropped from being the leader, over 20 years ago, to being ranked 26th in the world (saw it on Oprah).

The more the liberal media pushes sport, music and entertainment, instead of knowledge, the further and further the living standard will fall in the US..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Considering George only recently realised that "more of our imports are coming from overseas", I'm not surprised.

ha ha ha...i bet u had a smug smirk on your face when you posted this...news flash....we have a lot of imports that come from mexico and canada...check your globe, that's not overseas

Geographically sure, but I hope you're not suggesting that road hauliers bring in more goods to the continental US than commercial shipping… I think you'll find that isn't quite true.

exactly the point, so it is a true statement, more of our imports are coming from overseas, and on an annual basis it gets a bit higher each year vs imports from mexico and canada, so your trying to get a dig at the president, but your just looking foolish

I thought supporting the free market was a form of economic liberalism…?

In which case - I wonder if the output of the supposedly liberal media stems from that same 'economic liberalism' - put profits and output first, programming "quality" is irrelevant so long as its just 'good enough'.

I didn't make the claim - he did. He's on record for saying it. Paint it any way you like it's a stupid "statement of the obvious". An "import" predominantly comes from overseas, from a foreign country - that's what it is. Not sure what you're trying to say here other than trying to trap me with semantics - the same semantics BTW that tripped GWB up to begin with.

He might as well have said "more of our paper comes from trees".

Quality is a cultural thing. Over the past 20 years US quality has taken a dive. No one gives a ###### in the US. Whereas take a look at a country like Japan or Germany, which have a strong focus on work and not entertainment ethic. Their goods are more expensive yet people still want to buy them.

Yet both those countries have just as much entertainment media as the US, Japan decidely more so. I hazard a guess that the media is not a root cause of laziness - and has more to do with education, family history and general cultural outlook.

Australia does not allow home schooling.

I by no means am saying entertainment is solely to blame. There are a range of factors such as what is considered entertainment and to what level a society revolves around it. Japan does not have a cultural focus of gang banging, rap, etc. Look at how crime statistics have changed post 60's. Classical music for example has been proven to increase someones IQ. Now lets compare that to the current ####### that comes out of various states..

Need I post examples..

:ot2: So what happened in Neigbours? :P

Here you go..

But Japan does revolve around entertainment - have you seen the programming over there? They have more video games, light entertainment programming and consumer electronics than anywhere else in the world.

Yes both of those interests generate billions in revenue, aka jobs, for the country. I highly doubt japanese kids grow up and wish they would become a pokemon figure.

Whereas kids in the US look at losers like rappers as heroes.. Because they are cool man... They are a bunch of drop kicks who are :jest: laughed at overseas, yet are  cool in the US..
