The IV package (with all beneficiary ORIGINAL documents) is sent to the NVC in Vermont. The AOS package (from petitioner) is also sent to the NVC. The NVC forwards these original documents to the Consulate (my case Kiev). The beneficiary has the photo copies of all these documents (because I have sent them to her) and takes copies to the interview. At interview/or afterwards beneficiary receives original documents back. Is this correct? I have the original marriage certificate and am reluctant to send in mail, but I guess we can always obtain a certified copy in Kiev. Please forgive me if all of this is boring, but allow me one more question: What is meant by sending in a PDF file of the original IV and/or AOS documents?

99% correct--it all goes to New Hampshire, and yes you send originals per the instructions for AOS and IV--don't guess--just read them.

Some consulates want documents sent electronically--a pdf file is the electronic copy--yours isn't one of them, so it is paper for you !!

Thank you very much....slowly but surely this whole process is sinking in.

if you send in photocopies plus originals of civil documents with the ds-230, the IV unit is supposed to return the marriage certificate, birth certificate, on interview day.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

The reason I ask this question is because I have seen in other places where the beneficiary is to bring in "original" or "certified" copies of these documents. This is the reason for my confusion.

usually, there's a LOT of detail, with a legend, in the interview letter.

Many people get confused by the legend.

also, IV instructions on an Embassy WebSite tend to be focused on DCF'd I-130s, as well.

So, knowing what your Embassy wants, for your visa type, is really important. Can find an interview appointment letter from someone else that interviewed at your Embassy? That'd prolly 'remove all doubt', ya?
