Greetings All,

Not sure what my mother-in-law should use for "type of visa" on the application. I would say "Tourist Visa" (since she travels on it to come in/out of the US) or should it be "Immigrant Visa". Not sure what the official term should be. On the biographical info page in her passport, for type it only lists "P".

Can anyone clarify???

Thank you,

The "type" code on the biographical information page of a passport indicates the document type. The letter "P" means it's a passport - nothing more.

What sort of application is this for? Is your mother-in-law currently in the US? Is there a visa in her passport? If so then look at the visa under the line that says "Visa Type".

Thank you,

i'm sorry and i agree with Jim. i just looked in my burgundy Jamaican passport and on the laminated page on the top left it does show the "P" it is not used and and just means a standard passport.

Her son (USC) is applying for his mother. She is currently in Jamaica, but can travel back and forth. Her visa is a 10 year visa. Would that be called a immigrant visa? I just don't know what should be put in this area. This is the DS -230 (IV application) form that's being completed.

No, it's not an immigrant visa. Immigrant visas do not generally allow you to enter the US multiple times because you wouldn't need to - you become an immigrant (i.e., you get a green card) when you enter the US the first time with an immigrant visa. In all likelihood, she's got a B2 visitor's visa. It will say on the visa under "Visa Type" what type of visa she has.

Okay, then what I meant to say is she probably has a 'nonimmigrant' visa then. I will have her look at her visa and tell me the type and that's what I will put on the form.

Thanks so much for your help!!!
