I chose to forgo an attorney because our case is simple and unproblematic:

a) Neither of us have ever been married.

B) Neither of us have a criminal record.

c) Neither of us have ever attempted to enter the U.S. on a K-1 before

d) My fiancé has never run afoul of immigration (no overstays, no bans)

e) My fiancé is not from a country with a history of visa fraud.

That was my logic at least; with any of a-d) I probably would have considered finding an attorney, but my case didn't seem to require specialized legal advice, just filling out paperwork.

I am just beginning the process of applying for a k-1 visa and wondering whether I should get an immigration attorney who specializes in these types of visas. Is it worth it? Any good references?
Unless you have some complicated, non-standard situation, then it is a waste of money. You can easily spend $2K or more, and all the laywer does is make sure the forms are filled out correctly. Unless one is a complete moron, one can do this oneself. Also, no one is more interested in making sure your forms are correct than you. IMHO, it seems unwise to trust it to anyone else. Finally, there are some stories on here of lawyers screwing things up and costing their clients a lot of time.

In short, I'd it it yourself if I were you, unless you have a non-standard situation.

Cheers!

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

If your somewhat organized go for it alone. Use the cash for other expenses that you will most definitely have during the process. Good luck !!!!

Not unless you have money to burn and/or a good reason to have a lawyer.

I have one and it hasn't been speedier, not that much easier, and really I've gotten more answers from this website.

If you search, there are lots of other threads on just this subject, such as:

and this one's a poll: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=23274

You also should check the guides and try filling out the forms.

And you forgot http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=27794.

When I started this in February, I was determined to hire a lawyer, just so I could make sure it went as smooth and fast as possible. I am SOOO glad I took the recommendation of those here at the time and did NOT hire one. Their opinion was [a] that this visa journey community could help me with the information to file the K1, and a lawyer will not monitor the situation as closely, complete the forms as quickly and double check the work as thoroughly as you will, because it is more important to you than it is to a lawyer.

After reading stories here involving lawyers that were sometimes horrific and sometimes just lesser quality service, I'm glad I undertook it myself.

Of course the savings in $$$ is always good. Now I can afford to fly down to be with my Love for the interview at the US Embassy in two weeks.
