From what I've read a consular officer may ask to see original documents related to the petition. You might want to check with the consulate/embassy though. In Brazil, for example, they advise the beneficiaries it's not necessary.

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

Luis&Laura,

And some bring a copy because they read somewhere that they should - out-of-date advice that carries over from the days when many consulates would open a provisional file and allow people to start the visa application process before the approved petition arrived if the applicant could show that there was an approved petition.

That option is gone, but the advice associated with it carries on.

Sling,

I heard later that the actual NOA2 was needed later on in the process - after your fiancee arrives in the US. Not sure about this... I just read a post recently that someone needed a copy that they never received during the AOS or something like it.

Seems rather ridiculous to carry the NOA-2 document into the interview, as you would not have an interview without having received the NOA-2 approval.

An oxymoron, in a big way.

William,

I agree. So why, I continue to wonder, does a copy of the Approval Notice have to accompany I-485 for adjustment of status?

At our recent interview, they actually kept a copy of our approval notice that we brought along. I noticed they placed it inside the visa envelope that will be presented to the POE people. IMO, it's always wise to bring a copy of it to the interview. Our case was a recalled one that went through Mexico, so it was not a typical situation. (no scheduled interview and confusion at the consulate about how to handle our case)
