Steelers' Mendenhall apologizes for, clarifies tweets on bin Laden

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall wrote an apology on his personal blog Wednesday and clarified some remarks he posted on his official Twitter page earlier this week in the aftermath of Osama bin Laden's death.

"Nothing I said was meant to stir up controversy. It was my way to generate conversation," Mendenhall wrote. "I believe every opinion should be respected or at least given some thought. I apologize for the timing as such a sensitive matter, but it was not meant to do harm. I apologize to anyone I unintentionally harmed with anything that I said, or any hurtful interpretation that was made and put in my name."

His series of tweets on Monday included: "What kind of person celebrates death? It's amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We've only heard one side..."

Mendenhall addressed that tweet, saying it was a response to "the amount of joy I saw in the event of a murder."

"I wasn’t questioning Bin Laden’s evil acts," Mendenhall wrote Wednesday. "I believe that he will have to face God for what he has done. I was reflecting on our own hypocrisy. During 9/11 we watched in horror as parts of the world celebrated death on our soil. Earlier this week, parts of the world watched us in horror celebrating a man’s death."

He also tweeted, in reference to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, "We'll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style."

That tweet was removed on Tuesday, and Mendenhall did not address it in his blog post.

On Tuesday, the Steelers released a statement from team president Art Rooney II.

"I have not spoken with Rashard, so it is hard to explain or even comprehend what he meant with his recent Twitter comments. The entire Steelers organization is very proud of the job our military personnel have done and we can only hope this leads to our troops coming home soon."

Mendenhall helped the Steelers reach Super Bowl XLV, where they lost to the Green Bay Packers. He led the AFC champions in carries (324), rushing yards (1,273) and rushing touchdowns (13) this past season. He has 2,439 yards in three seasons since being drafted out of Illinois in the first round of the 2008 draft.

In the 2010 postseason, Mendenhall ran for 230 yards on 61 carries in three games with four touchdowns, as Pittsburgh defeated the Baltimore Ravens (31-24) and New York Jets (24-19), before falling to the Packers (31-25).

Mendenhall's other bin Laden tweets included:

"I believe in God. I believe we're ALL his children. And I believe HE is the ONE and ONLY judge."

"Those who judge others, will also be judged themselves."

"For those of you who said you want to see Bin Laden burn ... I ask how would God feel about your heart?"

"There is not an ignorant bone in my body. I just encourage you to think."

Mendenhall's tweets have been a hot topic on sports radio talk shows in Pittsburgh and around the nation.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

So I'm guessing he's one of those who is going to believe that Osama was shot only because he was actually getting ready to provide proof that he had nothing to do with 9/11. Pretty soon we're going to hear that Obama actually had nothing to do with the Osama kill and that all along it was ####### Cheney's secret squad that went in there.
