I am hoping someone can help me out with this! I am getting together documents for the I-134 and my stepfather is my co-sponsor. Do I need his birth certificate and the marriage certificate of he and my mother (to prove the relationship)? I was told this, and want to make sure before I make my parents pay for certified copies of these. Instead of the birth certificate could I use a copy of his passport? I don't see that this is necessary based on the directions of the I-134, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks!

You don't need to prove any sort of relationship to the co-sponsor. He/she can be a friend of yours or his, a neighbor, or anything. The only requisite for the co-sponsor is US citizenship and that his/her income is above poverty level. The birth certificate can be used to prove citizenship. I'd take an original copy just to be safe.

The biographic page of a US passport will work to establish the joint sponsor's citizenship. Or a US birth certificate.

Any US citizen or Green Card holder can be a joint sponsor.
