so ladies & gents ... i was wondering how much i should tip the grocery delivery guy??

i've been ordering my groceries online for a bit now and have them delivered. it's perfect for busy people on the go who want to maximize their family time when they actually get some time off (or for other various reasons) ... it's just like the supermarket with sales, coupons, etc ... and it's from a well known supermarket chain!

so my question is ... how much should i tip the guy who delivers my order? my order is anywhere between $150-$200. i know 'tipping' in general is 10-20% depending on service ... but what's the rate for delivery people?!?!?! i have been tipping $10 for my past orders which is less than 10% of my order but they just deliver it (shoppers actually buy and bag my groceries) ... too much? too little?

anyway ... thoughts? ideas? suggestions?

*whispers* mmhmm ... ari, you need to do this (since i know you hate shopping)!!

are you supposed to tip delivery people on the cost of what you bought? So when I had my $1500 mattress delivered, I should have given the guys $150 - $200?

I've had groceries delievered. I paid for the delivery service, and I tipped the guy $5 - $10, depending on how heavy I thought the stuff was. I am probably wrong in the tipping world, but the only time I actually use the 15 - 20% calculation, is in a restaurant. Everyone else gets a flat rate that feels right to me!

04/13/06 - I-129F mailed

I have never tipped furniture delivery guys. They get more than minimum wage, unlike servers.

ok ... good, i'm totally not off base then!! :D:thumbs:

i really do recommend it. you can pay a variety of ways (direct check saves $1.00) and the delivery fee is nominal (to me).

I think the percentage tipping rule is mostly just for places where the service is proprotionate to the amount of money you spend. For example, if you are at a restuarant and only order a cup of coffee, the server only has to make sure your coffee is refilled. If you order a 3 course meal, the server has to take the order, make sure it's cooked correctly, serve it, and remove it. So, you spend more, you tip more. With delivery I normally just make it a flat fee. Like for pizza guys, I tip $3, unless it's snowing or raining or something, and then I might up it to $4 just because they had to go more out of their way.

I think $10 is enough gimy. They aren't making you food. Just delivering it.

I'm curious though... can you have them delivered at whatever time is convenient to you?

VP,

The site addresses that question. You can schedule deliveries for certain time windows. If you pick certain windows, they will even give you a small discount.

I've hesitated to use this because I'm picky about what I buy. Like do they dig back to the back of the milk fridge to get the latest exp date? Will they squeeze my melons to be sure they're ripe?

I know they say they select the best produce, but for those of you with experience, do they really?

I'm sure the delivery man will be happy to.

I have a cousin who has been using this stuff for a while, and he claims the quality of the produce is good.
