Right, plus I don't see how someone near that threshold could just "stop working" to stay below the noted level. I will say that this is a sharper contrast than taxes where once you cross each threshold only the money earned above that threshold is taxed at the higher level. Kinda sounds like they should have eased the quantities a bit where the last subsidy tier is just a few thousand.

I've taken this kind of leave before. At least I had a job to return to!

These practices are obviously shunned... less productivity, although in my case a temp was hired to fill in while I pranced around Europe with the then fiancee.

Thank goodness for the power of savings in those cases. As for tax brackets, getting bumped up meant treating my new-found riches had to be dedicated to other forms of salary-reducing deductions that were still good for me. For most of us though, even the bump means very little increases in actual tax paid after filing due to other available avenues for deductible expenses that were technically unaffordable before the raise. Win-win without the doom brigade.

I can understand unpaid leave for contract workers. But in all the companies that I have worked so far as a fulltime employee, you just can't take unpaid leave without proper documentation/reason such as FMLA. On very rare occasions, they let employees take a sabbatical for research at a doctoral level, however I have only seen them in state agencies and never in the private sector.

thing is, if one can do it and afford to be off for a month or two then that $14,700 will be within reach - and that would be only if one is making $7350 a month or more. i see a financial incentive that may create more empty offices towards the latter part of the year (and really, who gets work done from thanksgiving to new years?).
