I just want to ask if anyone can share any experience about transition to schooling, with regards to their children.

My eldest son, who is 17, has started college in the Philippines; my other son is now 15, and is a HS Senior ( he was accelerated);and we are expecting them to be here by Aug/Sept, God-willing.

My children has apprehensions about coming to live in the US, with regards to schooling, as they might not be allowed to be in the current school level they are in.

Anyone can share any input or advice? I will appreciate it very much if someone can shed some light on how I can make their transition here easier.

Thanks!

ezzie

We have the same concern in that her kids are 17 (first year college), 13 (8th grader), 11 (6th grader). I told the kids, especially the 17 year old, that she will need to see the guidance counselor prior to registering. In the US, kids do not graduate from high school until 18 years of age on average. The elementary students will probably be placed with kids there own ages. In the US, high school stops after grade 12. In the Philippines, kids graduate after grade 10. The college student is most critical in this case. In 1985, when I was in the military in Ft Rucker, Alabama, my ex four kids (from the Philippines and all elementary students) were all placed in classes that kids all the same age. They all came out of the US educational system just fine.

My stepdaughter who arrived last July is 14 years old, (she will be 15 this July). When we went through the enrollment process here in Georgia, they scheduled her for international student processing. She spent an entire day testing prior to starting school to determine her appropriate grade level. They placed her as a sophomore in high school. She is now finishing her sophomore year and they are testing her for the honors program next year.

hello sis my kids has no problem in entering in school here in Seattle Washington its kinda easy for them they are 11 (Grade 5)and 13 (grade 7)both of them can easily cope up and proud to be that both of them got all A's in school. the Seattle public informs me recently they are suggesting to get an advance Math by next school year i cant really believe on what they suggested and did not expect that my kids are more smarter here than in the Philippines maybe because they like challenge in class and i know they want to impress their step dad and my husband is very proud of them thats why their always getting a present from their step dad and which i found out is a good way of bonding with my kids and hubby.

Reminder, bring the school transcripts with you. In my daughters case, they were a god send. It took seven months for the school in the Philippines,(Montesorri De Manila), to send the transcripts here. Our local school system used the transcripts we brought, and testing, to determine grade level. Age was only a minor consideration, as she will only be 16 when she graduates high school here.

Thanks guys for sharing your experiences.

Does this mean that the system will not honor the HS diploma of my eldest? Does it matter where they graduated in HS? They're both in La Salle.

About International Student Processing- Is this by school, or is it standardized?

My problem is the 17 year old, as what was pointed out. Would probably not want to go through HS again... :(
